The general understanding of management tools and management philosophies is: 

Management tools are specific ways managers can assist their team in completing tasks more efficiently or achieving objectives more effectively. 

Management philosophies refer to overarching beliefs about the most effective ways to lead people and manage a business. 

Today’s business world is fast-paced, dynamic, and competitive. You need to think on your feet, be creative, and use every strategy at your disposal to thrive. Viable management tools and philosophies can support your business life cycle at different stages.

The problem arises when a management philosophy is unscientifically applied as a tool to pursue immediate solutions or gains.

What is a Management Tool?

Management tools are the specific processes and techniques a manager uses to achieve measurable results.

Management tools include various process SOPs, checklists, techniques, templates, software programs, and other methods that managers use to streamline operations and boost effectiveness. 

They often serve as intermediaries between general management principles (or philosophies) and concrete managerial practices (or tools). 

Some are specifically designed for particular aspects of your business, while others are general-purpose. 

There are many management tools. The important thing is that any tool should help you achieve your goals more effectively. If they don’t, then they’re not worth the time you spend on them.

What is a Management Philosophy?

On the other hand, management philosophies are the beliefs a manager holds about what drives performance.  They are the core principles that managers use to guide employees’ behavior and general guiding principles to make decisions.  

A good management philosophy supports your company’s culture and objectives. It can also be applied to the different stages of your business life cycle. 

Hundreds of management philosophies can be roughly categorized as human resources, people development, participative, and administrative. These categories encompass a wide variety of beliefs, but they are by no means exhaustive.

Differences between Management Tools and Management Philosophies

Management philosophies and management tools both guide your managerial decisions. They differ, however, in two key ways. 

First, philosophies are general rules, and tools are specific processes. Philosophies are broad-brush stroke guides for decision-making, while tools are the processes you use to achieve particular objectives. 

Second, philosophies apply to the company as a whole, while tools apply to specific functions within the business.

Management tools — also known as management practices or techniques—are used to monitor activity and make decisions. They aren’t good or bad in themselves; how you use them matters. To put it another way: Management practices are ends, not means. The right tools for you will depend on your management philosophy.

The primary purpose of management tools is to make your work easier and more efficient. Tools help you to plan better, track progress, set goals, manage projects and make decisions. 

Management philosophies are broader, more general guidelines on how to manage people most effectively.
