Who Is Lean Management For?

lean management

At the outset, Lean is a Management Philosophy, a Management System. It is not a mere tool to be delegated to the workforce for implementation.

Let’s dive deeper.

This article is part of a multi-part series on the subject. Links to the earlier blogs:

Lean is all about creating value for the customer while eliminating waste. It’s a never-ending journey of continuous improvement with the sole purpose of becoming better tomorrow than we are today.

So, who is Lean Management for?

Lean is for everyone, and it starts with top management. The success of Lean depends on the leadership team’s ability to instill Lean Thinking throughout the organization. Lean Management cannot be delegated; it requires total commitment and engagement from the top down.

It cannot be successful without the ownership and leadership of senior management. Lean implementation often fails because the execution is delegated to the workforce. Senior management does not participate in kaizen events. If lean is not adopted as philosophy by the senior management, its implementation will fail.

Why is it imperative for senior leadership to adopt lean management philosophy?

There are many reasons, but ultimately it comes down to this: Lean Management creates a culture of continuous improvement that empowers employees and drives results. And that’s something any organization can benefit from.

So if you’re wondering whether Lean Management is for you, the answer is simple: Yes.

Lean Management is for everyone who wants to create value and eliminate waste.

It’s a journey that starts with senior management. Lean Thinking is a way of life, not a fad or a tool to be delegated – it’s for anyone who continuously wants to improve and become better tomorrow than they are today.

Think about it this way – would you buy a car from a company that doesn’t believe in quality assurance elements, like Jidoka of Lean Manufacturing?

Or, would you fly on an airplane manufactured by a company that hasn’t adopted Lean principles of TQM (Total Quality Management)? I think not.

The same goes for your organization – Lean as a Management Philosophy has to be adopted by top management for it to be successful.

So, if you’re a senior manager reading this, ask yourself – are you fully committed to Lean? If not, why not? Lean Management is the way forward, and it starts with you.

If you want to instill a culture of continuous improvement in your business, ensure that your leadership team embraces Lean thinking.

It’s impossible to delegate Lean Management; it necessitates top management’s involvement and total commitment. Lean Implementation will fail if this commitment isn’t there.
